Empirical Bayesian EM-based Motion Segmentation1

چکیده
A recent trend in motion-based segmentation has been to rely on statistical procedures derived from ExpectationMaximization (EM) principles. EM-based approaches have various attractives for segmentation, such as proceeding by taking non-greedy soft decisions with regards to the assignment of pixels to regions, or allowing the use of sophisticated priors capable of imposing spatial coherence on the segmentation. A practical difficulty with such priors is, however, the determination of appropriate values for their parameters. In this work, we exploit the fact that the EM framework is itself suited for empirical Bayesian data analysis to develop an algorithm that finds the estimates of the prior parameters which best explain the observed data. Such an approach maintains the Bayesian appeal of incorporating prior beliefs, but requires only a qualitative description of the prior, avoiding the requirement of a quantitative specification of its parameters. This eliminates the need for trial-and-error strategies for parameter determination and leads to better segmentations in less iterations.

متن کاملQuantitative Comparison of FBP, EM, and Bayesian Reconstruction Algorithms, including the Impact of Accurate System Modeling, for the IndyPET Scanner
We quantitatively compare filtered backprojection (FBP), expectation maximization (EM), and Bayesian reconstruction algorithms as applied to the IndyPET scanner a dedicated research scanner which has been developed for small and intermediate field of view imaging applications. In contrast to previous approaches that rely on Monte Carlo simulations, a key feature of our investigation is the use ...
متن کاملMultiscale Document Segmentation1
In this paper, we propose a new approach to document segmentation which exploits both local texture characteristics and image structure to segment scanned documents into regions such as text, background, headings and images. Our method is based on the use of a multiscale Bayesian framework. This framework is chosen because it allows accurate modeling of both the image characteristics and contex...
متن کاملAn Empirical Comparison of Bayesian Network Parameter Learning Algorithms for Continuous Data Streams
We compare three approaches to learning numerical parameters of Bayesian networks from continuous data streams: (1) the EM algorithm applied to all data, (2) the EM algorithm applied to data increments, and (3) the online EM algorithm. Our results show that learning from all data at each step, whenever feasible, leads to the highest parameter accuracy and model classification accuracy. When fac...
متن کاملAdaptive Markov Models for Information-Theoretic Empirical-Bayesian MRI Denoising
This paper presents a novel framework for denoising magnetic resonance images. The framework relies on adaptive Markov-random-field (MRF) image models that we infer nonparametrically from the corrupted input data itself. The proposed denoising method produces an optimal reconstruction based on principles in empirical-Bayesian estimation and information theory. Given the corrupted input data and...
